A police officer doused with ammonia when called to a report of a domestic incident has been discharged from hospital.

The sergeant, from Lancashire Police, was among seven officers sprayed with cleaning liquid while on the call in Ash Grove, Darwen, in the early hours of Tuesday.

He suffered serious injuries to his eyes, throat and respiratory system and was treated at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Police say the officer is now at home being supported by his family, friends and colleagues.

He is due to have surgery on an injury to his left eye next week, police added.

The six other officers were also taken to the Royal Blackburn and later discharged.

In a statement, Lancashire Police said: “We would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming messages of goodwill and support. It is greatly appreciated.”

The offender escaped through a first floor window during the incident, but was arrested a short time later.

A 46-year old man from Darwen continues to be held on suspicion of Section 18 wounding and inquiries are ongoing.
