We're so proud of our Pride of Guernsey

ARE you proud of Guernsey? So are we, which is why today we are launching a brand-new set of awards to celebrate those islanders who help make this part of the world so special.

As your local newspaper for more than 200 years we have highlighted through decades of coverage, pages and pictures just why our Bailiwick is wonderful.

Yes we are blessed with great beaches, climate and natural beauty – but the main jewel in our crown will always be our people – and we know it.

Yet while we are, quite rightly, quick to acknowledge those whose standout achievements in sport, business and charity, merit major praise, others doing ordinary things that make an extraordinary difference also deserve their time in the sun.

That is why we plan to change all of that with the launch of the first ever Pride of Guernsey Awards.

Our accolades will deliver a very public thank-you to those whose quieter, yet no less valuable achievements, go on day in, day out, all around us. Whether it be through their jobs, or their efforts for others, all are making a great contribution to life here in the Bailiwick.

Most of us know a great teacher who has had a truly positive impact on someone's life, or a nurse or doctor who has helped their patients through some of their most difficult times.

Our emergency services do a sterling job too in looking after our safety and security, yet their bravery and commitment is something we should never take for granted.

Equally, where would we be without the quiet army of carers who selflessly give up their time to offer a good quality of life to so many? And let's not forget those hundreds of grandparents and parents who are the bedrock of families.

Pride in our island way of life can be seen right across the community – between networks of neighbours, parishes, in our creative spirit and in those who overcome challenges and inspire.

Ours is a story we are always delighted to share by warmly welcoming all who visit these shores.

Throughout the coming months we want to hear who you believe deserves credit for these vital but often unacknowledged contributions.

Tell us who you think really does us proud.
