Search steps up for pride of islands

TODAY we launch our final category in the Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards. As the community's newspaper, people are the lifeblood of our business. Over the years we have shared millions of your stories, including those of islanders who have faced and beaten some of the most challenging situations that life can present. With this in mind we were determined to include the Overcoming Adversity Award within the Pride of Guernsey.

Nominations for the other 11 categories launched over the past two weeks with the generous help of our award partners are already coming in, proving islanders have been waiting for a way to thank those who deserve public acknowledgement for the extraordinary things they do every day.

We know there are hundreds of people in the Bailiwick who before now did not qualify for awards but, nevertheless, without whom our islands would not be the unique places we know and love.

Finally, Pride of Guernsey is changing that.

Our nominations window will be left open until 30 June to ensure as many people as possible are put forward for the 12 categories: Emergency Hero, Neighbour, Carer, Young Achiever, Parish Champion, Welcome of the Year, Teacher, Grandparent/s, Angel, Parent/s, Arts Contribution of the Year and, as revealed today, Overcoming Adversity.

All those nominated – not just those eventually shortlisted – will be in the newspaper: a first for any local award. It means everyone our readers think deserves a special pat on the back will receive one.

Later, you will also be able to vote for your favourites in each category – ensuring these are your awards, and the nominees are the stars.

Already we are seeing inspirational stories coming in and are expecting many more from throughout the islands.

Nominating someone couldn't be easier either, via the special forms that will continue to appear in our paper and online at prideofguernsey.com, or which will be available at various venues around the Bailiwick.

And, remember, you will also be giving them a chance to win a prize worth £1,000.

It takes only seconds to nominate someone but it can be your way of rewarding the countless hours of effort, love and care they give.
