Time to note pride of our islands
AS WE mark the countdown in our search for candidates to crown the 'Pride of Guernsey', today's backing of the inaugural campaign by the island's Bailiff is welcome, high-level support for the Bailiwick-wide initiative. With now just a week to go to the closing date for nominations, his rallying call for islanders to put forward those they think deserve one of the 12 special accolades is a timely one. Launched by the Guernsey Press in association with our award partners to help fill the large gap left by other tributes, the hunt for names for the Bailiwick's favourite teacher, neighbour, carer, emergency hero, parish champion and health care 'angel' continues until 30 June.
We are also looking to acknowledge the many great parents and grandparents out there, our young achievers, those who contribute to our lively and diverse arts sector, inspirational people who have overcome adversity of any kind and those who provide a great Guernsey welcome through our hospitality industry or simply the way they deal with islanders and visitors.
Nominating someone will help them receive not only a very public pat on the back via the pages of our newspaper and online platforms, but also the chance to win a prize worth £1,000.
With a public vote due to start on 13 July, there is no time to lose in putting your nominee forward and ensuring all those who make our community such a wonderful place to live are finally put in the spotlight they deserve.
All those nominated will also be appearing in a special supplement in time for what will be a three-week public voting window.
Those who make the top three in each category will be shortlisted to go forward to our special ceremony on 8 October, where 12 will be officially unveiled as the winners of the Pride of Guernsey Awards 2016.
As Sir Richard rightly points out in our page one story today: 'This will be a popular set of awards that will enable the community to recognise the achievements and give thanks to those who go out of their way to help others.'
