Showing our community at its very best
THERE was laughter. There were tears. There were heartwarming moments and heartbreaking tales as we celebrated the amazing achievements, inspiring actions and unbelievable bravery of our fellow islanders.
It could only be the Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards.
Launched in 2016 to celebrate the many ordinary people in our community who do extraordinary things, this year’s awards attracted more nominations and votes than ever before.
On Saturday, the Guernsey Press newsroom was once again transformed into a grand awards venue where the 39 finalists gathered to find out who would be named the winners of the 13 categories.
Among those finalists were people who have saved other’s lives, or simply made them a bit easier, who have faced illness or tragedy, who have helped preserve or enhance our beautiful island, or who have gone that extra mile to help their patients, pupils or customers.
As well as being inspiring, there were some important messages contained in the winners’ speeches: check on your neighbours, look after your surroundings, get first-aid training, be there for your friends and family.
Every kind and thoughtful deed, no matter how small, makes a difference and helps to make our island a special place to live.
There are countless people in our community who are putting themselves out for the sake of others every single day. They expect no thanks or reward for what they do, but they most definitely deserve it. And that is why these awards were created – so that we, with the help of our generous sponsors, could offer recognition where it is due to the Bailiwick's many selfless unsung heroes.
As well as the fun, the glitz and the glamour, it was a truly humbling evening and those in attendance could not help but leave feeling proud of Guernsey and its remarkable residents.
This event showcases our community at its very best and it is fitting to be able to honour all these amazing people right here at the home of the newspaper that has been the voice of the islands for more than two centuries.
