Take lead from experts on virus risk
THE Bailiwick of Guernsey is far from alone in balancing risk of infection with the need to maintain as much of normal life as possible.
The coronavirus Covid-19 is testing countries across the world as it continues its seemingly inexorable spread from Wuhan, China.
It is only right to try to inhibit that spread with sensible precautions.
The decision to send home Grammar School students who went on a ski trip to northern Italy is an attempt to find a balance.
To some it will be a huge over-reaction, to others it is too little, too late.
It is important at such times to maintain perspective and respect the advice and knowledge of island health authorities.
Wash your hands regularly, use disposable paper tissues, keep clear of anyone coughing and sneezing, avoid touching your eyes and mouth.
These are all good, common sense hygiene methods, regardless of one well-publicised virus.
There are those who would go much further. This is the ‘raise the drawbridge’ option. Cancel holidays, lock down the ports, restrict our exposure.
That would be an extreme reaction and disruption to normal life. And, more importantly, it is not the guidance of doctors and experts.
One important piece of advice from the World Health Organization is that people should stay informed and be aware of what is going on in their own areas.
Island authorities, in co-operation with UK experts, will have the most up-to-date information on where and how Covid-19 is spreading. They are best placed to advise on what people in the Bailiwick should be doing to protect themselves.
They are also best placed to judge when more extreme measures might be necessary if the risk profile increases.
The Grammar School experience should be put in that context. Until there is confirmation of a positive test for Covid-19 in the island it is likely that coughs and sneezes are nothing out of the usual and the risk of cross-infection is very low, even for those who have travelled to at-risk areas.
Grammar School parents will understandably be concerned. Ill-informed conjecture and panic will only add to their worries.
