We must stick together for new liberation

MAKE no mistake. We are in a battle to save lives.

Not just from the virus directly, but from its wider impact on our community as well. The impact on individuals, families, companies, charities and the community is immense.

As the island enters its second week of lockdown, fatigue could understandably start to set in. Restrictions on movements are a challenge to what has been our normal way of life, so again it’s understandable that some of us may wish to go against the official guidance.

We must resist such temptation as the experts urge us to stay home to save lives.

We must remain resolute. By being apart but together, we can and must overcome the fiendish enemy.

This is a fight like no other and we are in it for the long haul.

Right now that means sticking with among other things the hand washing, the social distancing, looking after one another and a large dose of common sense.

On an island-wide level, the government must continue its efforts when it comes to health and care services as well as supporting businesses large and small as much as possible.

Resilience, resolve and hope will also help get us through. Resilience in the knowledge that people are working night and day, above and beyond, to keep critical infrastructure operating. Resilience in ourselves as well with the knowledge that we can get through this and that we are not alone.

Resolve for when the going gets tough.

There will be dark days, sadness and tears and must steel ourselves for those.

But there is hope, sometimes from the most unexpected quarters. Small joys from a child’s smile, a friendly call to a friend, colleague or family member or unexpected laughter can add strength to our souls.

We have to believe in hope and the return of better days, looking forward to when we can come together for a new liberation to treasure. As has been shared on social media, it really is #GuernseyTogether.
