A chance to build on armed forces links

AFTER a decade of enforced separation, islanders will welcome the return of the 201 Squadron standard from Guernsey to its headquarters at RAF Lossiemouth and take the opportunity to remember and celebrate our links with the armed forces.

201 Squadron is relaunching as an operational anti-submarine warfare unit.

But in looking to its future, it will also lean on its heritage and history, with Guernsey firmly in that picture.

‘It is our history and our heritage that sets us apart – and for 201 Squadron that heritage is tied to Guernsey. It is a lasting affiliation that is of great importance to all on the squadron – we hold the moniker Guernsey’s Own and we wear it with pride,’ said Wing Commander Adam Smolak in a short ceremony at Government House yesterday.

The island’s affiliation with the Guernsey’s Own squadron, which is the world’s oldest maritime aircraft unit, began in 1939 as part of a programme to link squadrons with different towns and cities around the UK to encourage support and recruitment for the Royal Air Force.

The UK government introduced Armed Forces Community Covenants 10 years ago, ‘not to replace what existing level of local support there was for the armed forces, but to build upon it’.

It encourages local communities to support the armed forces in their areas, to building public understanding and awareness of the armed forces community, to remember the sacrifices faced by the armed forces, to encourage the integration of the armed forces community into local life, and to encourage the armed forces community, in return, to support its wider community.

Many towns and cities in the UK have developed specific connections through this covenant.

As well as the history and heritage, Guernsey air cadets have been engaged with 201 Squadron in the past and it is hoped that a two-way commitment will continue to grow again.

Guernsey is respectful and ever-grateful for the military support and defence which is offered to the island.

The return of the 201 Squadron link is an opportunity to build on that.
