La Vallette an example for others
THE hard-working individuals behind Vive La Vallette may have chosen a ‘soft launch’ for the revamp of the Bathing Pools, but there can be no doubt that the site is now open for trade, and many islanders will enjoy the new facilities before too long.
Those involved must be congratulated for their efforts, not only in fundraising but also completing the project on time, in fact remarkably quickly, and on budget.
It is little more than three years ago that the States reported that after it had asked for public feedback, 350 ideas were submitted for six States-owned seafront areas. 35 of those were firm expressions of interest.
La Vallette has largely been achieved, but what of the ideas of an arts hotel and entertainment venue at the former States Offices? Or enhanced public space along North Plantation?
While ‘no ideas were off limits’ for six sites, though obviously someone would have to pay for them.
But while the bigger picture of the Town seafront remains unresolved, the Vive La Vallette team can take satisfaction in a job well done. They have tapped into the enthusiasm for sea swimming and the site has far wider potential too.
Having the Bathing Pools as a vibrant attraction will bring back good memories for many, and hopefully demonstrate a way forward for others to follow.
