Summer bounces back better

GUERNSEY’S summer season is getting into full swing.

The tourism industry is anecdotally reporting decent numbers, there is a bit of a buzz around, and the island certainly feels almost busier than ever with public events.

On the back of the Liberation celebrations and Platinum Jubilee parties, Guernsey just has not stopped in the past couple of weeks.

The desire to bounce back properly after two years of Covid restrictions has properly got into full swing, even though there are noises of another Covid wave on the way. Locally, case numbers have climbed in the past couple of weeks and Jersey finally admitted this week that two new Omicron strains have spiked its numbers and infection rate.

Despite that, the past few days have seen the return of the Harbour Carnival, Chaos Festival, numerous open gardens, the A La Perchoine film screenings, and then bumper numbers yesterday for the Association of Guernsey Charities’ annual fete.

Although much – all? – of the government’s momentum for so-called Revive and Thrive and Build Back Better seems to have dissipated, and all we have left are broken hashtags, the organisers of Guernsey events are made of sterner stuff.

It’s great to be busy again as we all look forward to a buoyant, busy and blessed summer season.
