Build it and traffic will come...
FEW topics infuriate the average Guernsey person more than traffic.
From congestion and closed roads to parking problems and pavement surfing, there’s always something to complain about.
The main issue is that there are simply too many vehicles on the roads.
Last year’s traffic survey from the States of Guernsey clocked nearly one million vehicle movements each week to and from St Peter Port and almost 11,000 vehicles an hour travelling along Glategny Esplanade.
And traffic problems are not restricted to Town, as anyone who has been caught up in the bottleneck at the Halfway filter at peak travel times will be able to testify.
The swathe of new housing developments in the pipeline for the north of the island is unlikely to help the situation, concentrating thousands more people and their cars in one part of the island.
With 320 houses proposed for the Leale’s Yard site, 313 at the Belgrave Vinery site, 190 at the data park,131 at Kenilworth Vinery and 138 at Pointes Rocques, as well as other developments, it is not surprising that residents are concerned about the strain this increase will put on the local infrastructure.
So it is good news that a specialist has started preparing a proper assessment of transport options for the north.
Here’s hoping an acceptable and effective solution can be found.
