A resolution is needed for Lib Day
WHEN is a consultation not a consultation? When a decision has already been made. We’re not talking about the Tax Review, but parochial concerns about plans, or no plans, for Liberation Day 2023.
After two years without a central event in St Peter Port, islanders’ views, and indeed, those of the parishes, appear to be very mixed about what should happen in the future.
Although Education, Sport & Culture, which has been accused of abrogating responsibilities of organising a day in favour of writing a cheque to the parishes, commissioned a survey to gather islanders’ views just a month ago, it has long-stated the view that big Town celebrations would happen only on quinquennial years in future, with the next due in 2025. Leaving parishes to rustle something up for 9 May 2023 as things stand.
From our contact with the douzaines, it appears a couple have embraced parish events, a couple may do so rather reluctantly, and everyone else would prefer a return to town. The response seems to reflect that of the public.
The ongoing challenges for the parishes, and by extension ESC’s five-year plan – will be public expectations – can they live up to them? – and the sustainability of volunteer help.
Let’s hope the true meanings of Liberation Day are not lost in an annual squabble about who takes responsibility for erecting tents and flipping burgers.
