They came, you saw, we conquered

WE EXPECTED the NatWest International Island Games 2023 to take off. But how?

Published

At the time of writing, the past 24 hours or so have exceeded wild expectations.

An opening ceremony which engaged thousands in the community.

Hundreds of people attending football matches between countries thousands of miles away with little connection to Guernsey.

Thousands at events involving us as the host island.

Changeable, but generally favourable, weather. People embracing alternative forms of transport.

And a smile on our collective face. No wonder our front page picture and headline says it all at this point in time.

Islanders love showing off their best Guernsey to visitors.

So far this week, we have done so in spades. And surely we will continue to do so.

Events appear to be brilliantly organised, volunteers are unerringly cheerful and helpful and generous with their time and efforts, the standard of competition is of good quality, and, to top it all, the host island sits on top of the medal table.

For now, that doesn’t matter.

But what does matter is Guernsey has discovered its best self and is keen to show it off. If only we had more weeks like this.
