Doubts over a French connection

NEWS about a potential air link with Paris will be welcomed by many. Islanders love getting off the rock and the wider their options the better, as far as they are concerned.

The case for funding forms part of considerations for the Government Work Plan debate the States is due to have in a couple of weeks. The rationale for the Paris proposal is that it fulfils two priorities in Guernsey’s air policy framework – the development of an international hub and a European hub.

But experience means we can fairly confidently predict now that even with financial support, the route won’t be a success. Guernsey’s air traffic doggedly travels through Gatwick and Southampton. Facts show that the other routes don’t really wash their face, but they suit Aurigny and Blue Islands to keep planes flying and widen our route map.

But these international links are unlikely to draw that many visitors, and their associated economic benefits, in. Rather they will take islanders away – and after one or maybe two trips to Paris, we’ll be looking for a new destination. It has happened before.

Aurigny’s direct weekly summer services to holiday resorts have been hailed by islanders wanting better options to get away, but the sustainability of a regular European route must be in doubt, and in bringing the proposal, Economic Development seems to already fear as much.
