What can Guernsey do for you?
Think not, on this occasion, what you can do for Guernsey, but what can Guernsey do for you?
The most telling questions in the 15-minute survey about living in Guernsey which is being conducted on behalf of the Guernsey Community Foundation, are to be found at the end.
There’s a lot beforehand to increase the understanding of how people live in Guernsey, what they might earn, and the level of comfort in their life, including how easily they could meet an unexpected bill. We probably wouldn’t expect Guernsey to be any different to many other places – there’s a lot of talk about hidden poverty, but not so much about those just about getting by.
The closing questions ask ‘what’s the one thing that would make the biggest difference to my quality of life’ and ‘if I could do one thing to improve the lives of other people, it would be…?’
Could we suggest that an appropriate answer to the first would be to ensure that your child or grandchild could be well-housed at a reasonable cost to allow them to build a life in their home island?
And secondly to improve the life of others – how about the States getting to grips once and for all with long-term health and care needs, to ensure that all islanders are treated fairly and equitably in relation to funding their care towards the end of their days?
You may have other ideas. We’d be keen to see them on these pages.
The Community Foundation would be keen to hear them too. You can complete their survey at https://survey.islandglobalresearch.com/s3/2024GuernseySurvey
