Taking good vibes to the streets

EVERY shopkeeper, every worker, and every visitor to Town over the past two weeks owes a debt of gratitude to the team and the performers behind the Guernsey Street Festival.

Throughout the fortnight we’ve been highlighting the performers, young and old(er), who have been out on the streets keeping islanders entertained. And what a great job they are doing of it.

The level of the talent on display is staggering. We’re hearing good things, seeing smiles on faces.

The organisers say the festival is intended to ‘celebrate all forms of street performance’ and ‘committed to the promotion of community spirit, the encouragement and showcasing of local talent and the celebration of visiting artists and street entertainers’.

Combined with a bit of sunshine and some cruise liner passengers, they make the centre of St Peter Port more like how we remember it in those ‘good old days’ – bustling, lively, joyous. And all for nothing as we pass among them (unless you wish to stay awhile and empty your pockets).

The only mild disappointment is that it only lasts for two weeks. Makes one wonder, if we can get so many performers an hour for a fortnight, could we stretch them, in more limited settings across town, over a longer period of the summer?

And then we can all enjoy those summery vibes for longer.
