So many lessons still to learn

ON A DAY that is typically all about the young achievers, let’s take a moment to think about the educators in the journey of life.

Students collecting A-level and further education results yesterday are embarking on the next big adventure, wherever it may take them. All their hopes and dreams are ahead of them.

For those who have helped to get them there, there is what Daniele Harford-Fox, principal of The Ladies’ College, described as ‘a sweet sadness’.

Teachers who have seen young people grow over the course of seven years in education may never see those young charges again once they walk out of the gates with envelope in hand.

As Ms Harford-Fox also said in yesterday’s newspaper, some may now follow the path they had prepared, while others find themselves taking an unscheduled detour.

‘Different paths bring different opportunities, and there will be other beautiful things that come with the unexpected.’ So many lessons still to learn.

In thinking of the experiences of the teachers today, you may have seen dozens of nominations for teacher of the year pass through our coverage of those nominated for the Pride of Guernsey Awards this year.

There are some great stories and people mentioned whose impact will live on in the lives of the young people they came into contact with.
