Time to look for a better way

WE LOVE an exchange of views on these pages in the Guernsey Press. And when Lord Digby Jones stopped by last week with a few thoughts – concerns – about ‘The Guernsey Way’, he wound up his fellow columnist Horace Camp to offer today’s retort.

In return, Horace bemoans a loss of identity and the need to preserve and cherish our heritage, and indeed, use it to shape our future, perhaps rather than the outside consultants the States seems to hold so dear.

It’s notable that Lord Digby’s views come from someone one suspects who may not have the same skin in the game as the Camp family, but one who cares deeply that the place he chose to make his home needs to do better, to be better. Why should he not have the chance to express those views?

Beyond saying that the island could prepare for an influx of (rich) new arrivals and might want to take a look at the open market opportunities it offers, his Lordship offers no English solutions to Guernsey problems.

In fact, much of his column resonates strongly with the views of Deputy Dave Mahoney in these pages and also available in audio form today.

Suffice to say, the views of both are relevant and valid.

Guernsey can still be Guernsey and yet do better, while learning from others. Indeed it surely must.

The views of all readers on this topic are equally welcome.
