Change where you don’t want it, and not where you do
‘THAT’S Guernsey in a nutshell. You get change where you don’t want it, and no change where you do.’
So said the woman who organised a public petition to ensure that the current tenants of the Fermain Beach Cafe would be able to stay, despite the States opening up the lease for new expressions of interest.
Some people might think that the current tenants were doomed, despite assurances of transparency and independence, from the moment the States decided to look around to assess levels of interest in the lease.
Once you choose to take a fresh look, there often appears to be a better prospect on the horizon, however you might define ‘better’.
However the comments from Andrea Lewis will certainly resonate with many. We can all think of many instances where change has been imposed for no apparent benefit, while the things we might wish to see changed are not, or, even more frustratingly, the prospect of change is floated, but never realised.
While we wait for that to ‘change’, let us hope that the decisions over the Fermain cafe prove to be wise ones, and that the current popular tenants might find a new base for their undoubted skills to shine.
