Think local or think global?
ARE global issues more important than local ones in Guernsey? The topic for today’s annual debate at The Ladies’ College could certainly resonate with many Guernsey Press readers.
And it’s a suitable one for a week when a reader contacted the newsroom, upset with our coverage on the World News page about the latest developments in the Middle East. They said that the coverage denigrated the newspaper.
After consideration, I disagreed. Our World News coverage is supplied directly, rather than curated by our team, and is a small window on the world for a newspaper which is unashamedly biased towards Guernsey.
We believe that, this page aside, our ultra-local focus sets us apart and places Guernsey where most of our readers want it to be – at the front and centre of their world.
Where else would weeds sprouting on the side of the road be front page news… and not be laughed at as a ‘slow news day’ but actually be something that bothers plenty of islanders.
It reflects that what matters to us would sometimes be laughed at elsewhere. But as we moan it shows that we care, and that is reflected in the strength of our community.
We shouldn’t, and don’t, live in a bubble. But the Guernsey Press is here for Guernsey and taking all the negative connotations away from the phrase, we are ‘Guernsey first’.
