People power counts
WITH reference to the recent Press letter from Susan Vidamour re. foie gras, I'm interested to see that she has raised the subject. Like most sensitive, decent people, I too find this imported culinary fashion and its method of production morally repugnant.
The best person to spearhead this foie gras issue is 'Joe Public'.
Not many people seem to realise that there is now an ethical, award-winning variety available, as covered by Janet Street Porter on Gordon Ramsay's F Word. If diners stated this preference at our local restaurants, restaurateurs would eventually respond by offering us the choice. Why not hand them the following link or else copy the details? www.frequency.com/video/ethical-foie-gras-in-spain-with-janet/35186994.
Sir Roger Moore, a superb PETA person of the year, wrote excellently on his own campaign against foie gras and will also motivate many: www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1215169/Roger-Moore-wont-speak-friends-eat-foie-gras.htm.
In closing, may I say how inspired I have been by the promising work of two relatively new forces in Guernsey animal welfare. Steve Byrne, among whose many successful initiatives, the Slygo outcome was a particular delight when he recovered the dog personally, further to keeping uncomfortable overnight vigils.
I'm sure his 'Angel' scheme – which I understand is also planned to extend to ferals – will be exemplary. Secondly, Charleen Clench, whose tireless efforts take up so much time that I know she quickly becomes overwhelmed by enquiries. Volunteers, I'm sure, would be welcomed.
