Maps with different views

IN THE Daily Mail finance pages on 17 December, in an article about Google, it stated: 'this is a company not short of ambition, given it photographed every house and road in the UK and US and is rapidly rolling out the programme across the world'.

And as we who enjoy strolling down memory lane streets in 'Google Streets' one can do this in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and many other places, including Jersey. But not Guernsey. The camera cars were here, but were vandalised. On the Guernsey Digimap web page it states 'Digimap Ltd is a private company and is the official partner for the States of Guernsey.'

To use this company to any benefit you have to subscribe.

If Google is not invited back I would like to see an inquiry of whether something sinister is going on. I'm sure the majority of people would like Google Streets and the rest of the free package here on island and not what is akin to censorship.

And why is it we in the Bailiwick, 'the not being the UK card' seems to be the excuse why we cannot do the National Lottery locally, yet we have to purchase a TV licence when you can pick up BBC in Europe and not be subject to the fee?

PS – I'm not against the TV licence as BBC Guernsey (radio) in my opinion is essential and a great service.

Editor's footnote: Managing director of Digimap Ltd, Colin Le Conte, responds: 'Digimap is the official mapping partner for both the States of Guernsey and the States of Jersey. The Jersey Google Street View went live in June 2011 and we do not know the reason why Google has not published their Street View of Guernsey.

The States of Guernsey and Google do have very different business models with the States of Guernsey mapping needing to be both up to date and accurate at all times.

Digimap and the States of Guernsey mapping have always strived to work closely with Google. We believe Google Maps has helped people's understanding of how intelligent maps can help their business and be used in their day-to-day life. Indeed, Google products are used in some of Digimap's free solutions, which includes the very popular AIS ship tracking system.'
