To fill, or not to fill?

After years of to-ing and fro-ing and umm-ing and ah-ing, the States is finally on course to implementing a complete waste strategy.

The plan, as the Public Services Department envisions it, is to focus on waste minimisation through reducing, reusing and recycling, before sending any excess off-island to be incinerated. But Vale deputy Laurie Queripel believes the department has been remiss in ruling out landfill. With Les Vardes (currently earmarked for future water storage) nearing the end of its life as a quarry, he says we could fill it with our residual waste for generations, and certainly at least until more sustainable, environmentally-friendly waste-disposal methods become available and/or more affordable.

What do you think? Should the States use Les Vardes for landfill, or should we stick to the current export/incinerate plan? Vote in our poll to have your say.

Voting will close at 1pm on Wednesday.
