Memo to States: control costs before new taxes
HOW on earth can these supposedly intelligent people not understand that all these extra taxes are caused by bad government spending and a seeming unwillingness to control spending?
All this will do if it is passed is stifle Guernsey businesses and make the poor even less well off.
Note:
Biggest new cost to the States: deputies' salaries that were not there years ago.
Second biggest cost: new senior civil servants with meaningless departmental titles.
New quango departments' costs: at least five new staff at senior levels for each department.
Gold-plated pensions: enough said, other than even the private sector has difficulty to match them?
TRP: where has all the increased revenue gone?
Buses: government caused the problems, not the companies. Didn't I hear £20m.-plus to put right?
Roads: has the cash flow been deliberately slowed or even stopped for some months? Potholes have never been so bad.
Water: where has all the money come from for the thousands of trees they have planted and why? Oh yes, waste water charges.
Motor tax: where has this revenue been spirited away to?
Hoses in the marinas: massive savings here, especially when they are sold off.
SAP: good title for a useless, costly system. Bear in mind if most of us in private industry introduced a system in such a way we would have been sacked.
New fees: for example Environment applications. This was not in place some years ago. Where is this money going? Indeed, where has it gone?
Best of all, traffic lights galore: to service the fantastic new data park, plus black bags to cover them, airport more or less finished so why are the temporary lights still at Bulwer Avenue still dealing with non-existent traffic problems?
Oh yes, temporary traffic lights all over the island, if all the States departments now have these, of course they must use them even in the most quiet areas.
Sell some of the massive property portfolio: can't do that. Need a number of quangos to look after it all.
And so on.
The whole problem is that when persons with good intentions get elected, they change and believe they then work for the States only.
You do not – you work under sufferance for the people who put you there, the people of Guernsey. Get out there and talk to people, not deputies or civil servants.
Always remember you are not there to benefit the States. You are there to serve the people.
Who gave you a mandate to increase and introduce ridiculous taxes when you will not control cost properly?
I certainly did not.
