Alderney won't cope with GST

I WRITE following comments from some members of the States of Guernsey in the media last week supporting the introduction of a Goods and Services Tax. I feel we should all be aware of the consequences of such a tax, especially on the island of Alderney.

Published

When a baby is born, the States will tax its milk, tax its food, tax its nappies and its clothes. If the baby was born and lived in England, it would not be taxed as there is no tax on food, nor on children's clothing.

I believe it is immoral to tax food.

If a store in Alderney orders 10 pallets of food from a wholesaler in Guernsey and it is delivered to the docks, GST will be charged on the value of the 10 pallets of goods, then on the delivery, charged again on the sea freight, again on the delivery to the Alderney store and, of course, we, the retail customer, pay the final price.

So, once again, we Alderney residents would also be put at an additional disadvantage tax wise and of course, the additional 'on top' GST will be on everything, goods and services, for life.

Spare a thought for those of us who may become disabled and unable to work, those who require long-term medical care and those who may have been less fortunate than many of us and end up in later life single and on a Guernsey states pension. We would all have to pay regardless.

GST should be rejected.

But what many of us will not be aware of is that both the States of Guernsey and the States of Alderney have already agreed by enabling legislation to adopt the GST law at a moment's notice. Did we want them to do this?

Don't blink, you may miss something.

Further, I believe that the introductory 5% would be nowhere near enough tax to pay for the additional cost of operating GST and paying for additional benefits to pay for people in poverty. It will soon go up to 10% and beyond.

Oh, I forgot to say... when you die, they will even tax your funeral costs.

Say no to GST.

MICHAEL O'GORMAN,

Alderney.
