Sick of paying for young mums

I WOULD invite readers to note, as they walk down our High Street, how many young mothers they see with a baby in a pushchair, either a mobile phone or cigarette in one hand and chatting with other similar young women, and count how many wear a wedding ring.

These women either promenade up the High Street or congregate around the cafe by the bus terminus, in the absence of having anything more meaningful to do. I am heartily sick of having to pay for them via my taxes and Social Security contributions. I have absolutely no doubt that the majority of these feckless young women have neither the wherewithal to raise these children independently, let alone with the financial support of the men who impregnated them in the first place.

As for free contraceptive advice – well that is a joke.

These girls certainly know where babies come from and deliberately get pregnant so the States are duty-bound not only to provide free accommodation but also all the other trappings and benefits as well.

It is a way for them to escape the family home and be 'independent'.

Gone are the days when illegitimate births were a scandal in the island, but surely there has to be a happy medium?

When are the States going to bite the bullet and exercise some control over this and start saying 'no'?
