Cost of 'lifeline' is choking us

WHEN are we going to wake up to the fact that the price of 'security' with Aurigny's monopoly is just too high a price to pay?

Published

I travel with my friends regularly from Jersey – easyJet flies to seven UK destinations from there now after serving Jersey for some seven-plus years.

Below is a snapshot of the cost of getting off each island, like for like, this half-term, when those with kids really are at the mercy of Aurigny – it's 50% more expensive to get to London than it is from Jersey. (Don't make me laugh with the Southampton/ train/Waterloo alternative.)

It is not a one-off due to holidays, either. In fact, I have done half-a-dozen trips to the north west this year with my friends, planned in advance, when I paid £159 return with Aurigny to Manchester and my friends paid £89 return from Jersey to Liverpool, so at best we are paying 50% more and at worst almost 80%.

Some lifeline if the cost is going to choke us.

Editor's footnote: Malcolm Coupar of Aurigny responds: 'Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your correspondent's letter. Fares are changing all the time. We just checked the same dates as your reader and found our flights to be less expensive than easyJet's.

As a rule of thumb, we would recommend early booking to get the best prices.'
