Alderney is being treated unfairly in spending terms

IN SPITE of the fact that the States of Guernsey spends about 94% of the income of the States of Alderney, the current relationship between the two islands is an unhappy one.

The commandant of Guernsey Airport is also the commandant of Alderney Airport – but the difference in the outlay of public expenditure remains totally inequitable and totally in Guernsey's favour.

I was very much against the States of Guernsey acquiring a large share in Aurigny Air Services – we poor souls in Alderney were assured that 'we would benefit.' How?

Fares to and from Alderney are now so prohibitively expensive that the majority of my family, who now all live and work in England, can seldom afford to come at all.

Owing to the disposal of some of their fleet of Trislander aircraft, the delivery of passengers, essential air freight (to our pharmacy) and our incoming and outgoing mail has become 'iffy'.

The three replacement Dornier aircraft will not fulfil the same functions and three are insufficient to allow for breakdowns. I understand that the life of these aircraft will only be 10 years – not a very sound investment, especially when there are better aircraft available.

Meantime, the promotion of both islands still seems unaware of the fact that all businesses in France have to belong to their local chamber of commerce, which would be happy to display and disperse publicity on our behalf in their branches free of charge – why isn't this being utilised?

Alas, the Tennerfest is no longer available for £10.

I was happy to find the Caritas Christmas cafe in Mill Street, both welcoming and very reasonably priced last week.

PS. And yes, stop wasting our money.
