Division is not new to Sark
I WRITE in response to the 'Roffey writes' article published on Thursday 20 November.
While everyone may have their own opinion on the situation in Sark, I am quite sure a lot of people would disagree with Mr Roffey in respects to Sark's Chief Pleas being 'one the most democratic parliaments imaginable'. To be elected, you need to fit and if your opinion does not match with those who hold the most sway, then no matter how much you might be the 'right person' and the person 'everyone likes', you can forget it.
The 'division' that is widely spoken about was present on Sark long before the Barclay brothers chose to invest their money in Sark. It was here when others I know of wanted to invest their money in Sark but, like the Barclay brothers, certain 'outsiders' are not given the stamp of approval so whatever they do will never be good enough.
As Mr Roffey chooses to point out, 'life on Sark has often been tough for the less well off', but why should this be the case? Why can Sark not try to be something different? What is so wrong about wanting something better for yourself and for your children?
I have lost faith in our government and the system of electing our government – it needs to change and that is why I do support the petition that Sark First is putting forward.
Like many others, I would like Sark to prosper but it cannot do this if the government in Sark cannot welcome new investment on the island – investment that is very much needed.
