True 'Guern' stuck up for the 'little people'

IT IS with great sadness that I received news of the death of one of the great contributors to your daily letter column, Wendy De Bourgonniere. Wendy was a true 'Guern' and proud lady, whom I worked alongside for nearly 10 years at Stonelakes Pharmacy on the Bridge. She was an incredible human being, the word 'character' could have been created just to describe her.

A wonderful, forceful personality, Wendy would take no prisoners when it came to people in power whom she thought were corrupt or up to no good.

She was always fighting the corner of 'the little people', those she thought had no say in society, and was always writing letters to the Guernsey Press on others' behalf who felt she could express their worries so much better than them. She hated perceived injustice and racism in particular.

Wendy did not suffer fools lightly (she would often swear at me when I wound her up), but she was also the most generous, loving, warm-hearted and simply kindest individual that I met in Guernsey.

She would always remember my children's birthdays or other special occasions and buy them gifts and visit, even though she was never flush with cash.

My deepest sympathies go out to Charlie and the rest of the family for the unbearable loss of their wife and mother.

Guernsey should be proud that it has the ability to bear and nurture people like Wendy De Bourgonniere.

Thank you, Wendy. I will always remember you standing tall at the chemist counter, hands behind your back, shock of white hair, and your 'size 10' figure as you called it, waiting for the next customer.

God bless.
