Legislation needs 'fast tracking' for vote referendum
I AGREE with Professor Lee's comments about the potential lack of legality of a referendum as proposed in respect of island-wide voting.
The amendment I had passed overwhelmingly in the States in 2002 to bring in the legal mechanism for referenda to take place in Guernsey has still not been implemented by the Policy Council.
This matter has been sat on doing nothing for 14 years, which is a complete disgrace.
However, until this legal mechanism is put in place we cannot have a proper referendum.
There needs to be urgent fast-tracking of this legislation, which is quite feasible, if our Policy Council has the mindset to do so.
As there is a campaign led by John Rhys-Davies for the Crown Dependencies to take part in the UK and Gibraltar EU referendum, it would be ironic if Jersey and the Isle of Man participated and Guernsey didn't (simply because of not implementing a law passed so long ago).
