Designs on harbour area
I AM writing to bring your readers' attention to an excellent idea put forward by Naftel Associates for the development of our east coast harbour area. This can be viewed on Naftel Associates' website under the title 'Cruising for the future' (www.naftel.co.uk – under the heading 'Coffee Break'). This idea has a lot of merit as it provides a number of benefits to Guernsey:
1. It improves the facilities Guernsey can offer to cruise visitors (who provide much-needed revenue for our island). We could have a purpose-built welcome centre with stalls, tours and a cafe all under cover. It reduces the need to use ships' tenders, avoiding many of the road issues at the Albert Pier.
2. It opens the way for us to attract 'super yachts' to use our island facilities, with again the extra revenue and business for our nautical service industry and attracting high net worth individuals to Guernsey.
3. It provides additional attractive facilities (cafes, trams etc.) for Guernsey residents.
4. It would provide a lot of extra employment and income in its construction at a difficult time in our island's revenue income.
5. This development is not taking up land (which is limited in Guernsey) but in fact is adding permanent extra land mass to the island.
This development could, if desired, offer further development opportunities in Belle Greve Bay if this was ever considered in the future, although it equally makes sense just on its own.
I would recommend islanders and our States deputies to examine and consider these proposals, which offer the whole island so many benefits.
