'Politician of the people' will not be forgotten
JUST a polite letter to say how sad it was to hear of the passing away of one of the best politicians that Guernsey has had in years. I refer, of course, to Dave Jones, politician of the people and, of course, one of the most intelligent we have had in government.
I always remember contacting him about a political situation I was not clear about. He said to just call in at his home at a certain time and there he welcomed me with tea and biscuits and took time to explain what the situation was all about. I stayed with him for about an hour and could not believe how knowledgeable he was about the UK constitution and ours. It was a shame this man was never elected to the top role of chief minister in his time, particularly with all his knowledge.
I remember that for years we had a problem with shortage of social and first-time buyers' housing. We had politicians elected to the Housing Department who had not a clue, and then this man was elected and turned the whole situation around by introducing the Housing Association idea which, to this day, is working successfully.
Dave Jones will be sadly missed, once again a man of the people who listened and was not scared to stand up and voice his opinion.
Let's hope other politicians take note and follow what he stood for, a politician you could guarantee at election time would win hands down.
Many times I had spoken to this man and can say how glad I knew him and proud of his political career.
A politician sadly missed but always remembered.
