Party politics is way overdue

I WAS interested to read your article headed 'Personality government is not fit for purpose' in Wednesday's Guernsey Press. Deputies Sam Mezec of Jersey and Deputy Chris Green of Guernsey present a similar view of the core governments of the two islands.

Such governments result from the election of individuals with little hope of satisfying their manifesto promises without a majority of other deputies agreeing with them.

The only way of avoiding the current ineffectual government is to institute 'all island' voting with a single vote for each parishioner. The forming of political parties would then become necessary. Each candidate would then represent a party of like-minded people and their manifesto promises would be far more successful.

To achieve this, each district could be split into sub districts to produce the same number of deputies. The party that achieves the greatest number of deputies takes control of the States.

In this way electors do not vote for the personality of their favourite candidate but for the manifesto they represent.

Surely it is way overdue for the island to benefit from having a government that carries out the policies that the people have demanded.
