Focus on island issues, not Trump

OVER the last month I understand that there was a small demonstration in the Candie Gardens about the new American president, Donald Trump. What followed was a bit of airtime for these protesters followed by quite a few published letters in the Guernsey Press from many contributors each airing their own views and opinions. I intended to write a letter about the protest and my opinions but then these letters started to appear and I thought I would bide my time.

However, I thought I would put my head above the parapet and say what I think. My first thought goes to Mr Sarre, who must have a lot of free time recently to answer all of the letters that are directed to him and his views. I have read all of your letters with great interest, and to an extent I support some of your views. However, if I were you, I would consider if all of this is worth it? Do you think Donald Trump cares that you are wasting your time defending him? Do you not think that you are wasting your time and efforts? The bit that really irks me is that fact you keep talking about evidence yet are trying your hardest to defend a person who is indefensible. Unless you have been living under a rock you must have heard his atrocious comments and the despicable things he plans to do, yet you still defend him and talk about evidence. The evidence is there for all to see, so why can you not see it?

To a certain degree, I would pose a slightly different question to the protesters that were at Candie Gardens. Do you really expect Donald Trump to stop what he is doing just because a bunch of protesters from Guernsey do not like what he is doing?

And please do not tell me this is for democracy and freedom of speech because if that is the case you all have too much time on your hands. Believe me, I do not like Donald Trump and if I thought that protesting in Candie Gardens would get him out of office I would have organised the protests and been an active member. But other than giving Mr Sarre something to do, your protest was pointless and, unfortunately, Donald Trump is still in power.

Hopefully, within two weeks people will stop wasting their time about Donald Trump and start thinking about more pressing issues in Guernsey.

I think Donald has had enough airtime as it is, yet he now seems to be invading Guernsey and our media. For the foreseeable future, he is not going anywhere so we might as well get used to it. However, I would like to take Mr Sarre up on his offer to protest outside the Royal Court about public spending in the States and I agree that protests should be for more pressing concerns in Guernsey.

Just in case people are wondering, you may email/send your letters to the Guernsey Press praising or criticising my letter, but do not expect a reply as this will be the first and last time I comment on this issue and my opinion will not alter. However, I will read your replies with great intrigue.
