Why not pan-islands voting?
THERE is going to be a vote on island-wide voting in 2020 – but what about having a box for Channel Island-wide voting?
It seems so little has been achieved this political term by our elected politicians, perhaps it would be better if islanders had the chance to appoint senators like the Jersey system. In other words, the Channel Islands would be run by one government but Guernsey could have many of its own powers. It would save an immense amount of money by streamlining the administration and avoiding duplication.
I don’t know if there has ever been a study on this issue but it could be time to consider it. It would work a bit like the Guernsey States, where Alderney has two representatives, so Guernsey would have, say, 15 representatives in the new Channel Islands government, whatever name it might have.
In this way, Guernsey’s interests would still be represented. The douzaines would have a stronger say in parish matters and receive some remuneration for the extra workload.
It’s evident that Jersey is managing to get things done, their economy is going forward. It doesn’t matter if some want to disbelieve, you can see it on the ground, the construction etc. Now the bigger island doesn’t always get it right, we know that, but it seems that here in Guernsey politicians have become so risk- averse that we fear getting things done at all, when in fact politicians and civil servants are paid not to churn things through but to deliver. The eleventh commandment is ‘thou shalt deliver’. Let’s stop processing and start delivering. It seems like the States of Deliberation has been literally an excuse to deliberate and deliberate in perpetuity. As some have said before, the system is broken. It’s clear silo politics is alive and kicking in Guernsey and it is not doing us any favours at all.
