Raise bus fares to fund better palliative care

HAVING listened to some of the States debate on assisted dying, there was a lot of debate on improving palliative care. Hearing that Les Bourgs Hospice costs around £1m. annually to run from donations, may I suggest the States donate close to or this amount on behalf of the taxpayer, deducting the amount from the millions it gives to the bus company and increase the bus fare to around £2 (approx. the price of a ham roll).

Some days ago I met six people off Condor having a three-hour (approximately) day trip from England. I took four of them to the bus terminus, returning for the other two in my taxi. They then had a trip around the island on the bus. Two taxi trips cost £9 for six people (£1.50 per head). Around the island cost £6 (£1 per head). Total cost for six people £15. (£2.50 per head).

The round-island trip is funded partly by the taxpayer, which I also contribute to from my earnings. I would dearly love for some of my income tax to go towards palliative care.
