Decriminalising cannabis would bring a range of benefits to islands
RESPONSE to Alderney cannabis debate article in Guernsey Press of 15 June:
We are delighted to be a part of possible changes to Bailiwick drug policy. In particular, we would like to publicly congratulate the members of the Alderney government who are pushing for change and wish them the very best in their efforts.
It was stated in the Press that Matt Birmingham had radical ideas including licences for cultivation, buying and selling. To us, and to many others who have been desperately pushing for change and to those who would benefit tremendously from access to this plant for medicinal purposes, these ideas are not far-reaching but would benefit the island’s people, health, coffers and infrastructure greatly.
The arguments against decriminalisation were unoriginal, invalid and expected. The same excuses and reasons that we have heard and debunked time and time again. We understand that many opinions have been influenced by historical media and propaganda. However, we at the Guernsey Drug Strategy Campaign will continue to educate those who wish to learn from facts and scientific evidence in order to help create a safer and wider understanding in the hope that one day, those who really need this plant will be able to use it.
We hope that Alderney will be courageous, scientific and forward-thinking in their approach to this debate and we look forward to watching this unfold.
With much support.
