Green fields of the north will be lost forever

SO, APPARENTLY Mr Gollop is happy to see more building in the north of the island, as stated in an interview broadcast on Channel News on 25 August.

Well, I live in the north and have become increasingly depressed by all the proposed new housing development in the Vale parish.

So many green fields are being earmarked for development. Not brownfield sites or derelict greenhouse sites, but beautiful green agricultural fields where horses graze – Tertre Lane, Hure Mare, Pointues Rocques and the small green field opposite the entrance to Alliance, to name but a few.

These are little oases among the already compact housing developments. Wholly inappropriate places to build.

Surely for the health and well-being (both mental and physical) of nearby residents this shouldn’t be allowed.

It will also affect the wildlife, tranquillity, light and the whole infrastructure.

Residents of the central and southern parishes will be rubbing their hands together – the value of their properties is increasing while the value of northern parish properties is diminishing rapidly.

The roads/lanes are so narrow that the traffic comes to a standstill most times of the day, not just during the commute. Who needs a 25mph speed limit?

However, what maddens me even more is how these fields are being sold to developers for hundreds of thousands of pounds, even before building permission has been granted.

It seems that however many representations against these proposed builds are made, permission is still given, albeit by perhaps reducing the density from the original request to probably what the developers actually desire in the first place.

Once built upon, these green agricultural fields will be lost forever. Shouldn’t we be safeguarding them for future generations? What about the island’s future agriculture needs? Please, no more building in the northern parish and especially not in our green fields.

Guernsey – the happiest place to live?

I don’t think so ... unless you live outside the Vale parish.
