‘Shameful’ example of penny-pinching?
SOCIAL MEDIA today (16 September) stated that the Battle of Britain Parade went through Le Pollet and the High Street and back as they were going to be charged for closing the seafront. Is that correct? If it is then some penny-pinching civil servant should be publicly named and shamed. If we cannot honour the people who were instrumental in giving us the freedoms we enjoy today then that is nothing short of scandalous.
This is similar to the police wanting to charge for escorting the Oakley Motorcycle Ride, which raised so much money for charity over the years, even though I understand that some officers were happy to donate their time for free.
There is too much penny-pinching in the States in some areas whereas some departments can spend money like it grows on trees, and regrettably Environment is probably the worst culprit. La Salerie folly, the L’Ancresse wall, Bulwer Avenue toucan crossing – that’s one and a quarter million flushed down the toilet straight away, assuming that the L’Ancresse wall comes in at the million quid quoted (which it definitely will not, probably £3m. I would reckon).
I regret the passing of the deputies and douzaine representatives who knew how hard it was to earn the quid they wanted to spend, as opposed to the ones today who are reaping the rewards of our finance industry, which may not be there forever, but we have let all our other sources of income fall into decline.
