Speed consultation: Voters won’t forget this sorry episode
THE Brexit vote (to leave the EU) went through on a 2% majority. How come a 10% majority on the E&I public consultation on speed limit changes was not enough for them to accept?
Why did E&I even go out to consultation with the public when it is obvious they’d decided already that 81 locations would have a lower limit imposed? The social media campaign did not ‘skew’ the results, the only thing that is skewed is the thinking of the E&I board.
Guernsey’s emissions overall will go up not down due to traffic moving slower (the best speed for a vehicle to travel efficiently is 55mph, but obviously that’s not feasible in Guernsey) so dropping many areas to 25mph from 35mph is going to increase emissions.
St Peter Port seafront is already choked with traffic (and fumes) for a lot of the day, without making things worse by backing up the traffic even more by having lower speed limits one, two or even three miles away.
E&I and their employees seem to just not understand the difference between traffic management and flow and traffic ‘calming’ (slowing). It’s about time we (the Guernsey public) had some professional ex/drivers giving some advice to these non-professionals and being listened to.
Lastly, thank you E&I for wasting two evenings of my (unpaid) time reading, digesting and replying to your convoluted ‘consultation paper’ that you’d decided the outcome of already, despite your protestations otherwise.
‘Perceived safety’ is not the same as scientifically/statistically based evidence on road safety for all road users.
The Guernsey public have had enough of draconian legislation being brought in by the few who seem to think they know what is best for the general public.
This sorry episode will not be forgotten when the time comes for elections.
