MOTs just an added expense for people who already struggle

HERE we go again, more expense being piled onto already hard-pressed Guernsey families in the form of unnecessary MOTs. In one breath our deputies are talking about in-work poverty, and then they want to pile on more expense with these MOTs, under the pretext that it’s a requirement of the EU.

Well, surprise, surprise, we are not in the EU and never have been. If anyone can afford to holiday in an EU country after all the hikes in the last budget then go and get your vehicle MOT’d and be made to produce the report before you get on the ship (if it happens to be running). Leave the rest of us alone with our struggle to survive on this expensive island.

Also the GMTA implied, if I am correct, that they wish to carry out these MOTs, not that they would profit from them but as a service.

Yeah, right. Will garages be charging customers the same hourly rate they pay their mechanics seeing as it’s non-profit-making to carry out this service? Or will it be the exorbitant rates that garages normally charge?

Back to the need for MOTs... With speed limits going down to 25mph and pelican crossings, cycle paths, speed humps etc. (all unnecessary expenses) popping up everywhere, you will be lucky to reach 25 mph.

I have to say that I can’t go along with Deputy St Pier’s vision of Guernsey being the happiest place to live in the next few years, can anyone?

M.J. BOURGAIZE.
