Hugo house to benefit island

MAY I be among the first to publicly thank the city of Paris, Francois Pinault and the many private donors for funding the splendid restoration of Hauteville House.

The quality of both the research and work carried out over the past two years is of the highest standard and brings to our island a world-class artwork for locals and tourists to visit and admire.

The massive amount of international publicity that this project has raised (over 100 journalists attended the opening) is certain to benefit Guernsey’s visitor economy for many years to come – fulfilling in part the aspiration expressed in the PwC 2017 report on tourism.

All of this without the States of Guernsey spending a penny.

Why did States members fail to bring a resolution to our government that might have assisted in this project? An asset that our island fully intends to benefit from.

We can only hope that lessons will be learnt and that the life and work of Victor Hugo, before exile, during his stay in Guernsey and when back in France, will become part of our island’s education curriculum. Perhaps then our children and grandchildren will be familiar with and understand the philosophy, creativity and generosity of this great poet and writer.

Congratulations to Gerard Audinet, Odile Blanchette, the staff of Hauteville House and the many craftsmen and women involved in its restoration, both local and from abroad.

Once again we can visit the home of Victor Hugo and marvel at his outstanding imagination.

Thank you.
