Time to crack down on lawbreakers
I AM writing this letter after having a very close shave on Saturday at the Vale Church filter.
I was coming out of the road from the L’Islet direction when an English registration Range Rover flew across my path from Route Militaire. As I sat there in a bit of shock and went to move, another English registration car, a VW Golf, did exactly the same. They obviously had both just come from the boat and were following each other.
It is time we either did away with our filter system or handed leaflets to every driver when they exit the boat, as they have no idea how to use a filter and probably think they are box junctions.
On another note, where are our police? We have had so many new laws passed in the last few years that are blatantly being abused:
l Rear seat passengers not wearing belts,
l Children not strapped in,
l Drivers smoking with children in the car,
l Brake lights out,
l Headlights out or out of line,
l Cycles with flashing lights (even a police cycle),
l Motorcycles/scooters with non-standard exhaust,
l Wrong style or sized number plates on cars or bikes,
l Driver using mobile phones, especially while waiting in traffic,
l Drivers holding hot drinks while driving,
l Cars with blackened out windows,
l Parking on pavements (Halfway, Red Lion, etc.),
l Cars for sale in public car parks,
l Cars in 23 hour parking not moving (like the ones parked in Robergerie Lane).
I could start on the cigarettes flicked out of car windows and dog mess, but I think anyone reading this will get the gist.
A few years ago, Sergeant John Tostevin started a campaign on the cyclist and the laws they also should abide by and eating/drinking while driving, as you obviously do not have full control of your vehicle. However since his time this has all gone to pot. The only time you see a policeman now is flying past you with blue lights on heading to a crime. Gone are the bobbies on the beat on the Bridge or in Town. You never see a police car parked up and if you now want to go to the police HQ to report something, it is closed.
Bring back real policing and start fining people for breaking the law, it does not have to be a big issue, if they are doing something they should stop them. Once the word gets around that a few have been done others will soon toe the line.
Also, have you noticed the new disabled parking on the Bridge?
The traffic committee were being told there were too many poles and signs on the Bridge. So they have moved the disabled parking from outside the Candy Shop and Boots and moved them to outside the Motor Shop and Roll Bar. Now forgive me if I am wrong, but would not most of the disabled drivers be visiting Stonelakes or Boots chemist to collect a prescription, or Tozers for a paper and NatWest bank, etc.? I don’t see many disabled people popping into the Motor Shop or the Roll Bar, etc. Finally, is it not also the law that the cars parked in these disabled bays must be for a disabled driver or a disabled passenger getting out? I see a known person to me parking in a disabled bay with their disabled parent not in the car or with them, but the blue badge on show.
