P&R’s mileage tax proposal is step backwards

I WRITE in response to Policy & Resources’ suggestion that there is a review into the possibility of imposing a mileage tax on vehicles.

Surely all responsible residents of Guernsey want our island to be as clean and safe as possible? The fuel duty ensures that those who create the most pollution pay more.

The fact that the revenue from fuel duty has gone down is a measure of its success as a tax on pollution. We already have this system in place, so why apply additional resources towards complicated new ways of taxing where the costs of administration will outweigh the benefits? Why not combine an increase in fuel duty with other incentives to reduce motor car usage? For example, a duty on the purchase of new motor cars combined with grants for electric cars. This could be a first step to phasing out the motor car completely.

We have a beautiful island. May we continue with cost-effective policies that make it cleaner and safer.
