St Peter Port harbour and frontage deserves all the TLC it can get
I LIVED in Guernsey from the mid-80s for around 20 years. I continue to visit the island on a regular basis. During this time I have witnessed many changes, particularly in St Peter Port. Every place needs to adapt and change in accordance with the changing demands of its residents and visitors and Guernsey is no different.
During my most recent visit last week I and others in my party noticed a considerable increase in the volume of traffic and traffic noise along St Peter Port harbour and front, an area surely crying out for some acoustic cameras. Whilst walking along the front we witnessed many antisocial driving incidents taking place, such as wheelies with one motorcyclist almost losing control, excessive and unnecessary revving of vehicles and the backfiring of reconditioned/modified exhausts, which are, of course, illegal.
It is no longer a pleasure to sit on St Peter Port front and admire the view and the many boats coming and going, which is a big draw to many who visit Guernsey. Where is the traffic enforcement in this area? I didn’t see any during my visit.
Strolling around St Peter Port harbour should be one of the many joys of the island, but from the litter scattered around the Liberation Monument areas, to some of the tired public houses, and for the above reasons, it is starting to fray at the edges and needs attention.
I have read with interest the latest Economic Development Strategy report which includes many valid observations and long-term plans for the future. The seafront enhancement project is of particular interest to me and I would like to know more about it. If there is any more information out there maybe someone could get in touch with me?
St Peter Port harbour and frontage is a jewel in the crown of Guernsey and so deserves all the TLC it can get.
If the States of Guernsey or anyone else would like to contact me about the issues I have raised in this letter, please feel free to do so.
