We should all stand behind our nurses

TOILING away, the majority behind four walls, the hospitals are a workforce of hard-working, dedicated, caring and special people – our nurses.

The question has to be asked, ‘Why on Earth do these people have to even consider fighting their corner in respect of remuneration in an island where frivolous expenditure on capital projects and benefits schemes, to name only a couple of examples, have become an accepted norm?’

Let me clarify why I have to put pen to paper . . . Over the past year I have spent countless hours alongside my wife in hospital both here and in Southampton and have subsequently witnessed, first hand, the incredible dedication, commitment and empathy of our nurses.

This, in reality, is a profession that we all hope we will never require the services of and the general understanding of its credentials in my opinion go largely overlooked only until one actually experiences what these people do.

Overlooked not only by many of us as members of the public but, what becomes more apparent and concerning, by deputies – not all, I hasten to add.

It is now time for this island to sit back and reflect upon its priorities.

If the pot’s big enough to even entertain the proposals of ‘hair brain’ projects involving significant capital expenditure, then it’s about time we transfer some funds from one pot to another, enabling us to maintain and future proof the assets we already have including our dedicated workforces – a far better and cost-effective long-term investment.

Nursing is clearly a profession of passion and the satisfaction of helping others and I am certain Deputy Soulsby [Health & Social Care president] is proud of each and every one of them – it’s about time others stood up and proved the same.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking each and every nurse we have met over the past year, including ward nurses, specialist nurses, community nurses and the palliative team for everything they have done for us as a family – a true credit to our island and no doubt worthy of far more recognition.
