‘Safety’ measures have made roads more dangerous
OVER the last month while working in my garage in Havelet I’ve made many acquaintances, both humans and dogs, while they bravely walked in all weathers around and around, up the Val des Terres, down George Road and Havelet, then again and again 115 times each. This, of course, was the Everest Challenge to raise money for the Sarah Groves Foundation and Guernsey Mind.
I estimate about 50-60 people were taking part in the challenge, so that’s 6-7,000 times up the Val des Terres between them. Well done to you all.
It crossed my mind that all those energetic people plus some pushchairs and dogs all crossed the bottom of the Val des Terres safely, and not one of them used Barry Brehaut’s unnecessary ‘jaywalkers’ courtesy crossing further down the road.
They also had to cross again a short distance further up the hill, that’s equivalent to 12-14,000 people crossing the bottom of the Val des Terres in one month without injury or the help of E&I’s latest folly and their nanny state attitude.
The way they have altered this busy road to build the jaywalkers crossing could well cause a serious accident soon, as the cars heading up the hill need to swing further out into the road to avoid bursting their tyres on the protruding kerb on the seaward side of the crossing. This makes exiting from Havelet to head towards Town more dangerous, as I frequently have to avoid cars approaching the hill on my side of the road.
This is not a one-off problem caused by E&I. The entrance into Salerie Corner car park is far more dangerous now than it was before, unless you can swivel your neck like an owl. The toucan crossing at Grandes Maisons Road, also built at vast expense and little used, has hardly been a success either, having seen two serious accidents since its conception, both times the cars ending up on their side.
The E&I are not a professional road management team and should not pretend to be, so please someone stop them having any more of their light bulb moments before someone gets hurt.
