Don’t attack those doing their very best to protect us
I TAKE some exception to the accuracy and tone of the letter published on Wednesday from G. M. Oldroyd.
He states that islands in the EU have stopped all arriving passengers but this is not the case. Majorca still has many flights carrying incoming passengers although the advice is that travel must be essential. Sardinia, Corsica and Menorca are also open.
His contention that there is no advice for incoming passengers here in Guernsey is also wrong. My wife arrived on 20 March, two days after new rules were put in place, and was given clear instructions on self-isolation for 14 days. As to people adhering to these rules, we do not, thankfully, live in a police state so we have to rely on community spirit.
You could argue that the 14-day isolation rules were a little late in arriving, but this pathogen has constantly caught society out with its speed of transmission.
My real anger is directed at his pernicious, unpleasant statement that the death of islanders will be on Gavin St Pier’s shoulders. At a time when we need to draw together and support one another, it is most important we don’t start a malicious attack on those who are doing their very best to protect us.
I have been impressed with the way the States has handled this crisis and the preparations that have been made to limit its impact. I have also been impressed with the level of communication, the tolerance shown by the police and the frankly wonderful show of resolution from our community.
