Support equality law to make our GuernseyTogether attitude a reality

I HAVE confidence in Guernsey businesses to meet the challenges of the post-Covid world. We are, after all, a hardy bunch on this rock.

Public Health and the Civil Contingencies Authority asked us to stay in and we did it. Guernsey businesses enabled people to work at home, they did their best to support those of us that couldn’t. They changed working practices at the drop of a hat, they changed their business offerings to customers.

From coffee shops to banks, innovation and a #GuernseyTogether attitude has been, and will be, as important to our survival as our director of Public Health. Now we are being asked to ‘Revive and Thrive’, and I am confident that our business community can do that too.

Because of this confidence, and the evidence of the past three months, I would like to offer this challenge to all businesses; make #GuernseyTogether a reality and join me in publicly urging our political representatives to vote in favour of equality legislation on 15 July.

Go further, use your influence and platforms to insist that legislation to protect fellow islanders from discrimination based on age, religious belief, and sexual orientation is

brought forwards and approved at the earliest opportunity.

Some people doubt that you are up to the job. Not long ago, leaders in your own community were telling us that it was simply beyond your skills. They told us that treating all islanders equally would be too complicated for you to manage. Even the editor of this very paper doubted your ability to do this, something that you all insisted you are doing anyway! But don’t feel too downhearted, because I have confidence that you are better than that. You’ve shown that you have the skills and enough of that fantastic Guernsey stubborn streak to prove the doubters wrong.

Please use your influence to show that #GuernseyTogether only works if we are all together, that #BuildBackBetter actually needs to be better, and everyone has a right to #ReviveandThrive.

The people of Guernsey have committed to supporting you in your time of need, please be the great innovators that you have already proven yourselves to be and support all of us in return.

Support equality under the law for all islanders and demand that deputies vote for the ESS legislation in full.

#YouHaveGotThis!
